There's an extremely strong argument that continuous scientific and technological development depend on the application of logic, reason and theorising/imagination/modelling (including maths) and engineering; all of which require a 'thinking machine' at least as capable as the human brain.

Non-consciously-directed thought (behaviours) can result in complex actions, but are unlikely to result in the construction of spaceships with 'drone' pilots flying on gut instinct. (Asimov's Erythro & Sid Meyer's Alpha Centuri vs Starship Troopers)

It's a twofer deal: You get the brains, you get the cognitive and psychological issues.
