I'm sure I recorded that documentary when it was aired in the UK. You could watch it quite comfortably at double speed and be disappointed in only half the time.
Making the alien civilisation dead just saved on the massive headache of predicting the implications of a live one. And the writers would have wanted to be paid the same as the writers of Arrival.
