It would be a crying shame to discover that “the nation’s first bipartisan political action committee related to UFOs” went belly-up because it failed to adequately monetize public interest in this ET thing.
Billy you have raised my antennae around this stuff. So when I recently saw that Demi Lovato used her platform? to stop people from being offensive to extraterrestrials by calling the aliens, I giggled at what you might think. But maybe she can bring attention to her fanbase to look a little harder into the dark sky.
I'll do Demi Lovato even one better. Why are they called little green "men"? I don't ever recall anyone describing their genitalia. Is it the default gender because only "men" know how to fly spaceships? Gimme a break.
You can thank one of your reporter colleagues for that one - "In the Kelly-Hopkinsville sighting of 1955, two rural Kentucky men described a supposed encounter with metallic-silver, somewhat humanoid-looking aliens no more than 4 feet (1.2 m) in height. Employing journalistic license and deviating from the witnesses' accounts, The Evansville Courier newspaper used the term 'little green men' in writing up the story." It still baffles me how the writer thought that up.
Makes me wonder if that sort of unethical (desperate or ambition-fed) behaviour, is just a phase or a permanent presence in all civilisations, no matter how far evolved.
I think there must be repetitive examples of everything throughout the universe, but I do hope that intelligent behaviour tends to move away from the truly primitive. Given that crime is usually a product of poverty, then can we hope that technological, cognitive and spiritual evolution will elevate the majority of planetary populations?
Technological advancement implies broader cognitive abilities (that scientists expect to encounter first, and the opposite of 'Mars Attacks' and President Trump), but we also expect an element of free will and a whole spectrum of behaviours and issues.
I'm not sure what I'm blathering on about, except that, statistically, we're more likely to encounter reasonable, rational entities than not (even on Earth) - it's just that we tend to hear more from the irrational ones (no offence Billy).
Entrepreneur Peter Ragone has been an advisor to Dem luminaries Al Gore, Andrew Cuomo, Gavin Newsome and Bill de Blasio.... Dem luminaries (???) I'm beginning to think that this post is political satire
Yo Billy, I can’t help but feel kinship toward you — I’m a long time local journalist in Northern California and spent most of a decade in a former karate dojo turned windowless newsroom, first as cub reporter and ultimately as city editor. Our owner, Dean Singleton, made a somewhat lucrative career out of eviscerating the fourth estate. Among other mysteries, our cavernous newsroom sported a teal carpet and several dark and massive stains that, if nothing else, intrigued the imagination. I bet even now, ten years on, that Rorschach rug still inspires a good lede now and again. Anyhow, love your work and your style. Keep it up.
I feel ya, James. In Sarasota, we went from a sprawling new museum-style glass showcase to the fifth floor of a bank building. The contractor bungled the floor plan and built a couple of offices with gaping round windows, no glass. I'm not making this up. I'm not sure why they even bothered with walls. Still, nothing that could compete with the charisma of mystery carpet stains, so hang onto that. But hey, I thoroughly enjoyed community journalism. And I hope you continue to find it rewarding.
I do still enjoy the work, though I've since moved on to hosting a half-hour public affairs show on the local PBS station. It's really the best of all worlds -- I get to interview whoever I want, and pursue the stories I think are important. I even occasionally get to do fun stuff, not necessarily local but informative and sometimes related to the phenomenon. Speaking of, would you ever be interested in coming on the show? You can check it out at www.headlinehumboldt.org. We feature 20 minute interviews that lead off the show, and I'd absolutely love to have you on. If not, no hard feelings.
